• Freeform Galettes: Dare to be Recipe Free

Sometimes I wonder if the internet has damaged the kitchen. On one hand, yes, it’s wonderful to have a world of information available to you at an instant. If I want a recipe, I no longer have to flip through endless cookbooks or food magazines. If something is going wrong with my recipe, no need to panic, just google it and the world wide web will provide me a solution. But I also feel there is something lost by having everything you need at your fingertips: Creativity. I no longer have to come up with something to do with that accidental two pounds of plums I ordered, the internet will…

  • S’mores Cake – Happy Anniversary Crumb What May!

S’mores. There’s a reason why it’s a classic flavor. Just think about biting into a freshly toasted, warm, delicious s’more right now. It’s crunchy, melty, and gooey; sweet, salty, bitter, and smokey all at once. It’s the perfect dessert in a tiny little square. Good with children, will easily travel. So when some friends and I booked a weekend cabin in Wisconsin for The Hubby’s birthday, I thought what better-flavored cake for a cabin in the woods then a s’mores cake? Long story short involving drinking, spaghetti and meatballs, a complicated board game, way too much corn on the cob, and some other things I won’t mention here… cake didn’t…

  • Chocolate Apricot Tarts – Bitter Sweet Delights

Hello Summer! 2018 has been a whirlwind of a year for me so far. I left my 9-5 to follow my dream of a culinary career, pursued my real estate license, traveled to Amsterdam, and moved into a new apartment. I’m very tired. I’m hoping that now that we’re settled into our new home that I will have more time to start baking and writing again. And so I present to you my first bake in my new kitchen: Chocolate Apricot Tarts! I first saw these little lovelies by Rebecca of Figs and Pigs when looking for handheld desserts for a Halloween party. How perfect these would have looked on my…

  • Quadruple Chocolate Cookies – No Such Thing as Too Much Chocolate

Chicago winter has arrived. I’m a little bit of a humbug, so my mood in November usually starts with depression that Halloween is over, then anger over people skipping Thanksgiving and going straight to Christmas, then a big fat groan upon hearing the first Christmas song of the season, and eventually settles on grumpy old man style mumbling about kids these days and shuffling around Target reluctantly shopping for secret Santa gifts with my hair shoved under my hat making me look like a cone head. Maybe it was years of retail that turned me against the Holidays. Or maybe it was working in Emergency Rooms (dark stuff my friends). Or…

  • Chocolate Peanut Butter Hand Pies – A Touch of Romance

Nothing says romance quite like chocolate. Seriously, say these words to yourself: “warm chocolate”. You can’t just blurt it out, whether voluntary or not you say it slowly, drawing out the vowels. Waaarrrmm Chooooocoooolaaatte….  The words bring to mind images of sexy lips savoring a bite of deep, bittersweet, deliciousness. The scent makes you feel instantly cozy, like a cup of hot chocolate, homemade cookies in the oven,  s’mores by a campfire. Maybe that’s why these chocolate peanut butter hand pies by Sally’s Baking Addiction spoke to me so strongly. They’re like heart-shaped pockets of chocolaty romance. They pair great with a cup of hot coffee for a cozy morning, or…
